5 Signs Your Brick Porch Needs Professional Tuck Pointing

In Michigan, our brick porches take a beating. Between the humid summers and the brutal "freeze-thaw" cycles of our winters, the mortar holding your porch together eventually begins to fail.

If you live in Sterling Heights, Troy, or Macomb County, keeping an eye on your masonry is key to avoiding expensive full-scale rebuilds. Here are the top 5 signs it’s time to call in a professional for tuckpointing:

1. Cracks in the Mortar Joints

If you notice small "hairline" cracks or larger gaps between your bricks, water is likely getting in. Once water enters those cracks and freezes, it expands, pushing the bricks apart and weakening the entire structure of your porch.

2. Spalling (Flaking) Bricks

Are your bricks starting to flake, chip, or peel off in layers? This is called spalling. It usually happens because the mortar is too hard or has failed, forcing the brick itself to absorb the pressure and moisture. Tuckpointing can often stop this cycle before the bricks are destroyed.

3. "Sandy" or Crumbling Mortar

Try the "Scratch Test." Take a key or a screwdriver and gently scratch the mortar between your bricks. If it crumbles away like sand or powder, the mortar has lost its structural integrity. It can no longer support the weight of the masonry.

4. White, Chalky Stains (Efflorescence)

If you see a white, powdery substance on your brickwork, that’s salt being pushed out by moisture. While the powder itself is harmless, it’s a "warning light" from your porch telling you that there is significant water penetration happening behind the scenes.

5. Visible Gaps or "Holes"

If you can see light through the joints or notice that chunks of mortar have fallen out entirely, your porch is no longer waterproof. At this stage, insects, vegetation, and water are all entering your porch foundation, which can lead to shifting and collapse.

The Bottom Line: Catching these signs early and investing in professional tuckpointing can save you thousands of dollars compared to a total porch replacement.
